The team was certainly looking forward to getting on the track again, having recently put a new engine in were feeling optimistic about the upcoming race series. Throughout the practice rounds on the Friday the Chevrolet Cruze had very good pace and had the potential to claim a podium finish.
On a chilly Saturday morning the team confidently prepped the Cruze for the mornings qualifying round, unfortunately in qualifying Michael only managed to qualify in sixth position, amazingly two tenths of a second separated sixth and third where the team were hoping to qualify.
With race one up, as the cars started the first lap Michael was just behind Duminy and Cronje. Just before a corner Cronje made contact with Duminy resulting in Duminy sliding off the track and being unable to do anything ended up in a horrific roll, fortunately he was able to walk away. Two corners later the marshals red flagged the race as a safety measure. As Cronje slowed down his team mate connected with the right side of his car and swerved left directly in front of Michael leaving him nowhere to go but over the vehicle. This resulted in a horrible crash damaging the Chevrolet Cruze, Michael escaped unharmed but the Cruze had to be towed back to the pits.
The team worked frantically and were able to repair the car for the final race of the day. Unfortunately we were positioned at the back of the grid. A determined Michael had a good start only to end up in another incident in turn two leaving him totally out of touch with the rest of the field. The Chevrolet Cruze managed the fastest lap in its class but ended up having to retire on lap ten due to issues from the earlier accident.
The team recently partnered with VMP Motorsport hopeing to iron out any reliability issues and will be introducing various upgrades on the Chevrolet Cruze for the next series event at Killarney raceway in Cape Town where we are hoping for a solid showing!
See you at Killarney raceway, Cape Town on the 5th of October.
